International Women’s Day March 8th: Issues & Leadership in the Canadian Geomatics Community

GoGeomatics Canada is focusing on women in the Canadian geomatics community during the month of March.  In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8th GoGeomatics Magazine will feature interviews and articles by women about women in our field.  Some contributors from last year will be coming back to share their thoughts on current issues relating to employment and leadership in geomatics, as well many new voices will be heard.

By sharing various stories and points of views from women in the Canadian geomatics community GoGeomatics aims to show that they are present and well accounted for in all areas of our society especially in the technical fields.  As well by talking to women who are leaders in geomatics we let the world know that women in Canada are taking on challenges and issues of great importance.

Learn where the Antipode for your area is – Just Point, Click & Reveal

Ever hear anybody use the expression “You better be careful you don’t dig too deep or you will end up in China” while digging a hole?

Even if that could be possible (to dig down through the Earth’s core and come up on the other side of the world), would it really be China on the other side of that hole? What would be the  real Antipode (straight line that connects one location on the globe with a location on the other side of a globe while going through the center axis) for that hole you were digging?

The antipodes interactive web map depicts antipodes automatically for any location that you select. Simply point and click and then easily reveal the place that is on the other side of the world for any location on the Earth’s surface (without doing the math).

Do not assume that your new degree automatically qualifies you for a Geomatics job (do not get me wrong, it will help but it is no Golden Ticket). The majority of us spend thousands of dollars in order to learn the latest and greatest often complicated technical skills while attending College or University but most often none of that money is spent on learning how to get a job after we are proficient with all those technical skills.

Now that you have worked hard, learned a great deal of information, and are no doubt ready to get on with your career, what do you do? Here I have compiled some information based on my experience to get you started with writing your Geomatics resume.
