Ontario GeoHub
The Ontario GeoHub is the Government of Ontario’s central platform for accessing authoritative geospatial data, interactive maps, and location‑based services. It is operated by Geospatial Ontario (formerly Land Information Ontario), the provincial body responsible for collecting, maintaining, and distributing Ontario’s geographic information. The GeoHub provides a unified interface where users can browse datasets, explore web maps, and download spatial layers that support planning, analysis, and decision‑making across the province.
A key component of the GeoHub is its Foundation Geospatial Data (FGD), the authoritative, province‑wide layers that help form the backbone of most Provincial mapping. These include transportation networks, hydrography, elevation and depth data, imagery, infrastructure, land parcels, place names, administrative boundaries, addressing, and geodetic control. FGD layers are designed to meet strict criteria for accuracy, completeness, and provincial relevance.
Most datasets are designed for province‑wide coverage, ensuring consistent spatial information across all regions. Foundation layers, such as roads, hydrography, and boundaries are suitable for both broad regional work, as well as detailed local mapping. Specialized datasets like lidar elevation data vary in resolution and extent. Because the GeoHub provides authoritative and openly accessible data, it is a key resource for anyone needing trustworthy Ontario related geospatial information for analysis, visualization, or decision‑support.
GeoHub and the Ontario Data Catalogue go hand in hand serving as the province’s open‑data ecosystem, but they serve different purposes with different types of users. The easiest way to think about it is this: the Open Data Catalogue is broad and cross‑sectoral, while the GeoHub is more specialized and mostly geospatial based.
