Reporting to the Manager, Inspection and Support, and as part of the Utilities Kingston Engineering Department, the GIS Technician will be responsible for collecting, maintaining, creating and editing GIS data and maps in an Enterprise Database associated with Utilities Kingston’s Infrastructure for the water, sewer, gas, electric and Fibre optics utilities. The incumbent will provide support to clients and other staff members such as engineers, administrative personnel and operational staff. He/she will be responsible for regularly updating and issuing distribution and collection mapping, drawings and other electronic and paper records as well as maintaining, updating and purging file records. The GIS Technician will respond to requests for drawing and mapping data and periodically carry out field verifications. He/she will develop and produce GIS mapping products and software applications, and use GIS data to implement and create mobile technology development for data collection.
Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required
Diploma from an Engineering Technician program, surveying/drafting, GIS computer information science or related field from an accredited Community College. Graduation with certification in GIS is preferred.
A minimum of two (2) years of extensive and hands on experience in drafting/mapping.
Experience using AutoCAD, ArcGIS and ESRI software.
Knowledge and understanding of utility infrastructure and the operation of GPS equipment is preferred.
Strong ability to use computers and computer software to perform work in a highly technical, fast paced environment.
Ability to read Construction and survey drawings, interprets technical manuals.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency using MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, MS Access and AutoCAD and ArcGIS.
Ability to work independently with minimum direction coupled with an ability to work well in a team environment.
Good organization skills.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy of work based on quality and program standards.
Special Working Conditions / Conditions of Employment
A valid Class “G” driver’s license is a Condition of Employment.
A Criminal Record Check, to the satisfaction of Utilities Kingston, will be required at the successful candidate’s expense.
