Blue Marble Geographics is pleased to announce the release of Global Mapper version 15.2. This minor release features new functionality to automate the “New Feature Creation” process, as well as the addition of numerous new online datasources including OpenStreetMap vector data links via Web Mapping Services (WMS). Blue Marble’s geospatial data manipulation, visualization and conversion solutions are used worldwide by thousands of GIS analysts at software, oil and gas, mining, civil engineering, surveying, and technology companies, as well as governmental and university organizations.

Global Mapper is an affordable and easy-to-use GIS application that offers access to an unparalleled variety of spatial datasets and provides just the right level of GIS functionality to satisfy both experienced GIS professionals and mapping novices. This minor release features a variety of updates to both the Global Mapper base product and the Global Mapper LiDAR Module. In particular new functionality has been added to allow the user to automate the “New Feature Creation” process. Users may now create a series of features that share the same attribute structure, target layer, and other characteristics without having to repeatedly confirm these settings in the “Modify Feature Info” dialog box. This release also features the addition of free online data sources including full access to the Maine GIS catalog, as well as access to Aviation Charts and OpenStreetMap vector data via WMS.

Blue Marble Releases Global Mapper v15.2 - 3D LiDAR point cloudOther enhancements include support for creating buffer areas around line features with variable width from beginning to end and for creating buffers on just one side of a selected line feature. Powerful new scripting functionality has been added to allow conditional (IF/THEN/ELSE) processing within a script file. 3D models from Collada DAE files have been updated with the option to load BMP, JPG, PNG, and TIFF images with no geo-position information directly, improved 3DPDF support, and enhancements to CityGML.

“These great new features and functions will streamline the user’s workflow, as well as save them time and money with the ease-of-access to a growing list of cloud based publicly available data,” stated Blue Marble President, Patrick Cunningham “This release is another great example of our mission to deliver a low-cost and easy-to-use GIS solution for everyone.”

Enhancements to the LiDAR Module in v15.2 include added support for the transformation (shift/rotate/scale) of LiDAR point clouds and the option to filter selected LiDAR points to a certain elevation range and/or set of colors. A new LIDAR_CLASSIFY script command for classifying ground points in a script has been added. Users now have the option to keep the original file offset/scale, or to specify a new one when exporting to LiDAR LAS/LAZ files. They also now have the ability to crop to a selected area when specifying the bounds to import from a LiDAR point cloud and the ability to export point cloud to Esri File Geodatabases (GDB) as normal 3D point features. These LiDAR enhancements are a great addition to an already powerful module for those interested in adding advanced LiDAR functionality to Global Mapper.

Info:  The School of Geography and Earth Sciences at McMaster has established a long history of teaching and research ESRI products. In 2008 McMaster became the first University in Canada that was designated an ESRI Development Centre(EDC).

The Graduate Diplomas and the GIS Certificate Programs are no longer being offered by the School of Geography & Earth
Sciences at McMaster University but they still offer GIS as a minor to either of their Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Geography Degrees. The minor in Geographic Information Systems allows students to study a combination of GIS and spatial analysis courses that are coupled with their Earth Science Degrees providing them an added edge over similar programs that are not fortunate enough to have an ESRI Development Centre at their school.

The McMaster GIS program emphasizes the development of a strong working knowledge of current ESRI GIS software and builds real world expertise and skills using state of the art desktop GIS tools and analysis for a wide variety of multi disciplinary applications.

Info: The one year Fanshawe College GIS Graduate Certificate Program at the School of Design is actually an eight month intensive program that prepares graduates from College or University for employment opportunities in a wide range of industries that everyday utilize both spatial and tabular data sets. Their program is hands on project based and industry leading software intensive training, Students gain a solid foundation of GIS skills coupled with leading edge industry techniques to

learn the skills that can provide spatial solutions.

In Fanshawe’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program, you’ll learn a complete range of GIS skills to help you increase your marketability. This eight-month intensive program will prepare you for employment in a wide range of land-based industries that require expertise in the use of spatial and tabular data.

Career Opportunities for graduates are to become GIS Specialists, GIS Programmers, Spatial Database Specialists, or GIS Analysts in either the GIS software industry, various levels of government of any private industry that makes use of spatial geomatic technologies. Their web site states that this program is open to International Students.

Fanshawe College also offers a GIS / Urban Planning Diploma that does not require a College or University background. This program focuses on the many uses of land and resources found in both rural and urban areas. Students learn how to design ideal communities, plan and co-ordinate land development, build and maintain geographic databases, using a combination of GIS, CAD and graphic design technology. The program is considered to be hands on providing industry experience through paid co-op work terms.

Graduates of this program tend to work in all different levels of governments, different land development companies, as well as many planning and consultant agencies. Some students even qualify for further education with the Urban and Regional Planning degree program through Ryerson University.

The diploma program in Geographic Information Sciences (GISciences) at Memorial is an intense 30 credit program offered to students that are currently registered in a Bachelor of Arts or in a Bachelor of Science Degree (Also can be offered to students whom have already completed a degree at another recognized university (see their web site for more details) .

The program is made up of a from a variety of cartography, geographical information systems, and remote sensing courses along with two field courses that help provide students with real world opportunities to apply skills and knowledge learned in class.

Students will learn to compile geo-referenced databases, design and produce maps, analyze data in geographic information system environments, produce digital elevation models, and extract information from aerial photographs and satellite images.

Languages of Universities Interactive Map

These days, people are starting to make the Internet their primary source of everyday information and more people are becoming aware of how valuable spatial data and maps can be, as a result there have been more webs sites containing interactive web mapping applications appearing. And as you can see from some of the many great mapping applications covered by CanadianGIS.com in the web mapping section, some of them can be pretty robust applications containing a wide variety of data sets and customization possibilities while others can still be relative simple mapping applications while still providing added value.

Perhaps a good example of a relative simple mapping application that is well done and does a good job of combing spatial and basic information is one I recently came across on the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages web site.

Map - University Language Programs in Canada

Here they use an online interactive map to demonstrate where the various English, French and Bilingual universities across Canada are located while providing basic information about each. The map allows its users to select predefined maps either by clicking on the map directly or by using the pull down selection box that returns either a list of possible schools or an exact school. Of witch when clicked provides a more detailed map and then information about the language skills provided at that institute.

Canadian Maple Leaf - half

Here, we see no extra tool bars, printing functionality or user customization provided, just the basic information about the intended language topics and then a link to the domain of the University where someone can find more detailed information about that particular University featured on the map. And although maybe not that impressive to a cartographer or a geomatics person, sometimes that is all that is needed with a simple mapping application.
