GeoNB – ‘All Things Geographic’ for New Brunswick data

Last year I featured GeoNB, New Brunswick’s approach to publicly available geographic information for the entire province of New Brunswick [see the previous article here if you missed it]. This valuable resource by Service New Brunswick provides a robust web mapping application, value-added products, various applications and extensive collection of open source data sets. Not to mention an outstanding web GIS application that stands out from others and one that earned them an Esri Canada Award of Excellence award last fall at the Esri User Conference in Fredericton.

GeoNB currently includes a wide variety of data sets for the entire province including digital topographic layers, orthophotos, property maps and much more. On top of having one of the best online mapping applications available they also provide access to download any of these digital data sets in a variety of formats for people to use in their own GIS software packages.

Over the past 4 years public usage of New Brunswick spatial data has increased significantly, with the average traffic to the site increasing from 5 thousand to over 13 thousand visitors every week. To meet the growing demand, they recently upgraded their geographic information gateway, building upon existing GeoNB initiatives and ensuring that residents of New Brunswick have easy access to geospatial information, pre-built maps and free online applications .

Basically the new site becomes the “All Things Geographic” place for New Brunswick’s geographic content consolidated and organized into one easy to use location. An initiative that helps encourage the creation of new geospatial products and solutions from geographic data that has been collected, maintained, and distributed using open data accepted standards. The new geographic portal is visually pleasing, well laid out making it easy to navigate and appeals to a wide audience. Everyone can take advantage of this free service from home owners that would like to know more about their property, developers seeking better sites for development, and those more advanced GIS users that want to use their own GIS software.

There are some new geospatial applications that were designed to support various ongoing government programs including wetland conservation, flood damage reduction, protected areas management, as well as a coordinate transformation service that converts coordinates between datums and map projections. geonb_applications_smThere are 4 key sections that include the Data Catalogue, Applications, Map Products and the new GIS Developer’s Corner. Each section will continue to grow and develop with new datasets and tools as inferred by the GeoNB Action Plan.

The Data Catalogue contains over 35 different geographic datasets in a wide range of formats that are available to download free. Here they simplified things pretty well making data very easy to find. Using a table format they provide the name of the dataset, link to more info about it, thumb nails for quick view, date the data was created, formats available and links to download data. This will be the section that most GIS people looking for data where go to.

The Applications section provides access to over 10 custom designed applications that combine datasets and value-added functionality. These tools have a broad range of uses but have mainly been tailored to different intended users and include everything from the popular web map viewer (read more details about the map viewer here) and Coordinate Transformation Service to more specialised viewers aimed at those in Oil and Gas or Wetlands Mapping. Certainly worth a look if you are just curious about learning more about New Brunswick.

The Map Products section contains more pre-made value-added off the shelf mapping products such as static maps that have been generated to convey certain information. Again here they offer a broad range of products tailored to different intended users; but unlike most of the other products on the site, these are more traditional finished map products. This section will appeal more to those that need maps but do not have the ability to create their own.

The GIS Developer’s Corner is a place where people can leverage more geomatics technology and intelligence making use of some applications that allow them to go beyond the basic functionality such as using the open data sources as a live map service instead of downloading (this is one of the features that I like and now use when generating maps for area in New Brunswick). GeoNB utilizes ESRI ArcGIS Server and has made data available as ArcGIS Server map services to those that have the ability to take advantage of it.

So I am sure by now you get the idea. Once again the team at Service New Brunswick have done a great job promoting and increasing the use of geographic data and maps in New Brunswick. From a new easy to use new geographic portal (in both French and English) that provides people with plenty of data and a wide range of robust applications GeoNB continues to stand out among the rest. But again don’t just take my word about it, go over to the new portal your self, make use of some of the data and tools and let the folks at Service New Brunswick know they are doing a great job.

City of Saint John Maps, Plans and Historical Data

Located in southern New Brunswick on the Bay of Fundy, the City of Saint John was incorporated back in 1785 and has grown to be known as a culturally diverse and historically rich city. Like many other Canadian municipalities have come to realize, maps are important to its citizens. Therefore the City of Saint John has been offering a wide range of maps, aerial photography and survey plans on their website dating back to the 1800’s. Below are some links to the many map collections that they have available.

The Saint John Historical Maps collection includes an interactive atlas from 1875, compiled from official hand drawn plans and surveys. You will also find an interactive map of Historic Coastline and Fortifications and scanned copies of Murdoch-Lingley Survey Plans from 1920.

City of Saint John Maps & Aerial Photographs

The Geographic Information Systems Division is responsible for creating and maintaining all mapping and associated geographic information for The City of Saint John and provide a wide variety of pre-made and interactive online maps. Their modern interactive online web mapping  application is provided for everyday uses that includes orthophotos, terrain models, parcel information, civic numbers and many more layers. The City of Saint John Historic Air Photo Archives contains a wide range of aerial photographs ans oblique images dating back to 1927.

They also provide a Saint John tourist map, public transit Maps, zoning maps, an interactive future land use map, street maps, electoral maps, trails maps, heritage conservation area maps and many more.

One would have to agree that a solid effort has been made  to provide a wide variety of pre-made City of Saint John maps and historical cartography. Perhaps someday we will also see spatial data become available as well.

Many professional organizations across Canada offer great geomatics related conferences and events every year, so we created the Canadian GIS Conference and Events section on CanadianGIS.com as a way to provide the geospatial community with free information about the various related conferences, events, workshops, training seminars and webinars that are being offered.

Our events section includes a variety events related to GIS, remote sensing, surveying, cartography, geography and all other geomatics disciplines (and from British Columbia to Newfoundland).

We are fortunate enough to be able to attend several GIS conference and events every year all across Canada so we also post summaries of past events (when we can) with photos for those that were not fortunate enough to attend but wanted to know how the conference or event turned out.

Esri Canada Celebrates 30 Years of Geographic Innovation

Esri Canada Celebrates 30 Years of Geographic Innovation

Alex Miller founded Esri Canada in 1984. From a small office in Toronto with six employees, the company has grown into a multi-million dollar business that employs more than 330 staff in 16 locations across Canada. Its customer base of more than 10,000 organizations has expanded from its initial wins in the forestry and agriculture sectors to all industries including government, business and education.  This significant growth is testament to the company’s unique ability in applying mapping and analysis to nearly every concern. In 2010, for advancing the use of GIS technology in numerous industries across Canada, the company received the Ontario Business Achievement Award for Innovation in 2010.

In 2010, the company launched the Esri Canada Community Maps Program, which is succeeding in building a detailed, national Web basemap for Canada using authoritative data contributed by government organizations across the country. The basemap is free for governments and the public to use, and speeds up the creation of mapping apps.

The company also developed the Esri Canada Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) solution that enables real-time tracking of fleet vehicles. The hosted solution improves the safety and productivity of municipal field operations including snow removal, tree pruning, roadside mowing and road repairs. As well, Esri Canada recently introduced Assessment Analyst, which allows assessors to incorporate various data and 3D modeling into their analysis to increase the accuracy of property valuations. J.D. Irving in New Brunswick was the first forestry company in North America to use Esri technology for the sustainable management of forests back in 1983. They consolidated numerous GIS apps and datasets across 10 regional offices into a single enterprise GIS in 2010. In addition to centrally managing their forestry operations for watercourse buffers, habitat and growing forests, the system now supports their other business areas including transportation, shipbuilding, retail and agriculture.

Today, Esri technology is used by banks, insurers, real estate developers, manufacturers, airports and hospitals to improve productivity, manage risk and effectively deliver products and services. Esri Canada offers the Esri Business Analyst (Canadian Edition), which enables organizations to use location analytics with demographic and business data to gain a deeper understanding of their customers, competition, market and trends. To make it even easier for business users to incorporate GIS into their daily workflows, the company also provides Esri Maps for Location Analytics. Advancing geographic education

It recently introduced a GIS in Education Grant Program, which awards software and training grants to five K-12 schools every year to expand the use of GIS in the classroom. Geomatics Atlantic 2013

Geomatics Atlantic is a regional conference that switches between the Atlantic Provinces every year allowing the different geomatics related professional organizations to take turns hosting the event.  This year the event was held in Saint John, New Brunswick and hosted by the Canadian Institute of Geomatics (CIG) New Brunswick chapter.

This was the fourth Geomatics Atlantic event that I have attended and perhaps the smallest as far as attendance, however what it lacked in quantity it certainly made up for it in quality. I have provided this brief overview and photo slide show of the event with the hope to encourage more people to attend future Geomatics Atlantic events.

Day 1 included several free workshops put on by AGRG, SNB, ESRI, MDL, Blue Marble, Blackbridge Geomatics and Leading Edge that covered topics related to cloud computing, LIDAR, satellite imagery, and terrain analysis.

Geomatics Atlantic 2013 PhotosThe main theme of Day 2 presentations were focused around health care, online mapping and how the industry has been evolving over the past few years.   It started off with a presentation by Dr. Mohamed Abousalem promoting Tecterra services and explaining how although they are dominantly working in the Canadian West that he hopes that they can expand in to the Atlantic Geomatics market soon. Most people were not aware of the many ways that this non-profit organization has been funding geomatics innovation projects with government funding so he had no problem captivating the audience. He also let everyone know that Tecterra is planning on hosting an event in Halifax early next spring.

Several opportunities were provided for conference participants to mingle with the various vendors that took the advantage of the exhibitor hall. The industry was well represented by the vendors that attended and provided people with everything from various types of imagery and data right up to LIDAR sensors and UAVs.

Geomatics Atlantic 2013 PhotosThe conference social event was sponsored by Picaroons brewery in Fredericton who provided a taste test sampling of eight of their signature drafts. This particular sampling was more like an all you can drink event thanks to the low conference attendance, which is something that always goes well with a geomatics crowd. So needless to say that this one was no different and a big hit among many attendees.

The focus of presentations on Day 3 were more remote sensing themed and revolved around topics such as imagery, LIDAR and hydrography.  The first new Canadian Vertical Datum in 85 years was revealed and sparked interest from a majority of the audience.  Several Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, elevation data types and hydrography topics were discussed with an interesting twist involving two presentations on Bathymetry. Through the two separate and distinct talks people learned that marine mapping could be done with either high range lasers like the AGRG LIDAR system or also done with low tech equipment strapped to a kayak.

Presenters from all across the Atlantic Provinces came together for this event and the three days of activities clearly demonstrated that Atlantic Canada is very active in the Canadian Geomatics Industry. Geomatics Atlantic is scheduled to take place next in Newfoundland, hope to see many of you there.

Submit an Online Web Mapping Site

Online Web mapping involves designing, implementing, generating and delivering maps to end users via the Internet through common web browsers, allowing people to use maps interactively with out needing high end software. Web GIS is very similar to web mapping but provides analysis, data processing, publishing and other GIS abilities. Often these two terms are used synonymously, even if they are not exactly the same product. None the less both have been increasing exposure over the past few years, a major accomplishment for the GIS industry and since Web mapping can not exist without GIS, (and for simplicity) we have combined these all into one category here on the site.

OSCAR-js – First Open Source Initiative for CARIS

CARIS, an industry leading marine GIS organization based out of Fredericton, New Brunswick has designed and built software solutions for over 30 years. Recently they announced their release of CARIS OSCAR-js (Open Spatial Component Architecture) , their first open source Application Programming Interface (API).

CARIS OSCAR-js, a JavaScript Map API was designed to allow users to create and embed custom web mapping applications into their own websites.

The API was created to help shape CARIS Spatial Fusion Enterprise and includes tools for navigation, measurement, and download, as well as providing a means for developers to create their own custom tools and extensions. OSCAR-js extends the very popular OpenLayers library and utilizes jQueryUI and YUI to help create a feature rich mapping experience.

The API is designed around the creation of map themes. Map themes consist of thematic maps along with optional functionality such as selection, data download or more. OSCAR-js supports the use of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web services including Web Map Service (WMS), Web Map Tile Service (WMTS), Web Feature Service (WFS) and Web Coverage Service (WCS) for creating these map themes.

In addition to supporting OGC web services, OSCAR-js can connect to CARIS Spatial Fusion Viewer to load map configurations. This allows for centralized site management for your web map infrastructure.

CARIS OSCAR-js websiteThe source code for the CARIS OSCAR-js API is available on GitHub under an Apache License 2.0, enabling users to generate their own development for customization. Creation of custom pages for OSCAR-js also requires a basic working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML and CSS. However like most web technologies, users can learn about JavaScript, HTML and CSS via many great books and sites on the web.
