Many professional organizations across Canada offer great geomatics related conferences and events every year, so we created the Canadian GIS Conference and Events section on CanadianGIS.com as a way to provide the geospatial community with free information about the various related conferences, events, workshops, training seminars and webinars that are being offered.

Our events section includes a variety events related to GIS, remote sensing, surveying, cartography, geography and all other geomatics disciplines (and from British Columbia to Newfoundland).

We are fortunate enough to be able to attend several GIS conference and events every year all across Canada so we also post summaries of past events (when we can) with photos for those that were not fortunate enough to attend but wanted to know how the conference or event turned out.

Esri Canada Celebrates 30 Years of Geographic Innovation

Alex Miller founded Esri Canada in 1984. From a small office in Toronto with six employees, the company has grown into a multi-million dollar business that employs more than 330 staff in 16 locations across Canada. Improving business productivity ESRI ArcGIS 10
J.D. Irving in New Brunswick was the first forestry company in North America to use Esri technology for the sustainable management of forests back in 1983. They consolidated numerous GIS apps and datasets across 10 regional offices into a single enterprise GIS in 2010. In addition to centrally managing their forestry operations for watercourse buffers, habitat and growing forests, the system now supports their other business areas including transportation, shipbuilding, retail and agriculture.

Today, Esri technology is used by banks, insurers, real estate developers, manufacturers, airports and hospitals to improve productivity, manage risk and effectively deliver products and services. Esri Canada offers the Esri Business Analyst (Canadian Edition), which enables organizations to use location analytics with demographic and business data to gain a deeper understanding of their customers, competition, market and trends. To make it even easier for business users to incorporate GIS into their daily workflows, the company also provides Esri Maps for Location Analytics. The Geography department at Trent University has a strong emphasis on field based hands on learning with interdisciplinary study. Many of their courses are mixed with other departments and programs such as the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) program witch is associated with Geomatics at Fleming College.

Degrees with a specialization in GIS are offered either as a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science and combines human and physical geography. Various courses include urban geography, urban planning, spatial modeling, GIS and remote sensing.

Students in the Honors program explore the thesis and community-based research options witch provide valuable training for further post-graduate studies and work experience.

Roger Tomlinson: The father of GIS and computerized cartography

What’s the smartest location for a new coffee shop? Where do you deliver food and water in a city hit by a catastrophic earthquake? How fast are glaciers melting?

Roger Tomlinson taught us how to solve such puzzles.

An Ottawa based geographer, Dr. Tomlinson has been called the “father” of the world’s first geographic information system (GIS), a method of computerized map-making that he pioneered in the 1960s. By combining in an interactive map not just topographic features, but other data that can be linked to specific locations (such as census findings, gas lines, nickel deposits or even beetle invasions), he revolutionized the storage and analysis of spatial information.

Today, governments, corporations, relief organizations and many others use GIS to analyze and plan development projects, mount retail promotion campaigns, track changes to landscapes and respond to emergencies. Although Dr. Tomlinson developed his GIS insights before the advent of satellite mapping and global positioning system (GPS) receivers that put users into maps, his work paved the way for the waves of cartographic innovations that followed, including Google Maps.

Dr. Tomlinson, 80, who died on Feb. 7 of a heart attack in San Miguel de Allende, in central Mexico, once said that although he may have fathered GIS, many others were raising the child. Indeed, when he was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada last year, the citation noted that his “landmark creation underpins virtually all spatial analysis and has enabled new questions to be asked in a wide variety of disciplines as diverse as telecommunications, epidemiology and resource management.”

the Story of COGS – A Nova Scotian experiment in Technical Education

In the mid-1980’s the survey school (Nova Scotia Land Survey Institute, NSLSI) was responding to the rapid changes in computing technology. It had introduced a number of computer application programs (e.g. Scientific Computer Programming, Business Computer Programming, Computer Graphics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)). There was pressure for a name change that more appropriately reflected the breadth of the technical training.

There was considerable debate about naming conventions, Geographic Science(s) versus Geomatics Engineering. One of the influences in this debate was Dr. Roger Tomlinson.

As we remember Roger’s contribution to both GIS and Geography, it is noteworthy that NSLSI became the College of Geographic Sciences (COGS) in 1986.

The story of COGS is an attempt to place the transition years between NSLSI and NSCC into its appropriate context. The first two chapters describe the early years and personalities at NSLSI.
Chapter 3 explains the transition to COGS, whereas Chapter 4 looks at the second transition into the NSCC. The last chapter reflects on the highlights of the COGS era.

The real story of COGS  will always be its graduates. The authors hope that this short contribution will encourage others add their recollections, and to remember fondly their time in Lawrencetown, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. In many ways, the strength of an institution lies the lives of the alumni.

We welcome any comments, corrections, and additions. This is just a personal view of a specific institution in rural Nova Scotia.

The post-graduate certificate program from Sault College has been known to prepare students for a solid career in geomatics through the integration of industry practiced GIS and remote sensing techniques. Students are encouraged to apply their knowledge and skills with interactive engaging hands-on training using the latest GIS and remote sensing software available in a Sault College Applied Research Centre state of the art GIS computer lab.

A strong emphasis is placed on teaching the fundamentals and theory of GIS with a focus on hands-on training. Courses provide practical experiences in the use of ArcGIS, ENVI, PCI Geomatica, MS Access, MS Project and other industry standard software products, as well as Visual Basic, SQL, and ArcObjects programming languages. Students get the opportunity to work on specific industry related projects, including a 4 week field placement that provides opportunities to apply skills and knowledge gained through the class room into real world situations that can help build upon their career portfolios.

The integration of fieldwork using GPS equipment into the Geographic Information Systems environment is included. As a student who is sponsored by an employer, they have an opportunity to work on specific and real world projects. One of the many highlights is that students will participate in a four-week field placement with a potential employer in a location and aspect of GIS that meets the employer`s needs. Students may have the opportunity to be involved in applied research projects.

 

The worldwide demand for more efficient ways to gather and interpret spatial data on resources and other features of the earth`s surface is constantly increasing. This high-tech, leading-edge program provides the graduate with the skills to become an integral part of an industry that is resulting in a variety of disciplines. New applications of GIS technology provide graduates access to job opportunities presently available to few.

Ortho Imagery for Central Nova Scotia

On September 29th, 2003 Nova Scotia was hit by a category 2 hurricane that
caused extensive damage northwards across the center of the province. Over the next few months the aerial photography was acquired to create digital orthomosaics from to help access the damage created by the hurricane.

These digital orthos (MrSID image files at a scale of 1:24000) are available to the public for downloading from the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources website. The Hurricane Juan Web Map, an online mapping application is available to help spatialy define the various ortho tiles so that users know what areas each download file represents.

The mapping application contains all the compressed tiles of the ortho images with other basic layers such as roads, water, mapsheet index and damage assessment. A toolbar at the bottom is available to help navigate and locate map sheets. Data is in UTM Zone 20N NAD83 and can be used with ArcGIS.

Recently I had an opportunity to talk ‘one on one’ with Arthur Berrill, CTO of DMTI Spatial; a Canadian geomatics based company that has been a leader in the Location Business for several years. I started off by letting Arthur know that as I was not really interested in doing a traditional interview but rather wanted an opportunity where he could help illustrate how ‘the Location Concept’ has been driving the success of DMTI in Canada. Then through a detailed conversation combined with a full product review I would be able to help the Canadian GIS & Geomatics readers to see how DMTI Spatial has been able to unlock the ‘Power of Location Economics’. Arthur graciously provided time for a detailed discussion, some literature and use of DMTI‘s Location Hub® Portal.

DMTI Spatial has been a frequent contributor to the free press release section on CanadianGIS.com so I was already aware of many of their products like the CanMap® geospatial datasets and how the Spatial Mapping Academic Research Tools (SMART) Program has been benefiting Canadians. Therefore we did not discuss much about other products and jumped right into how critical location based information can help make important planning decisions affecting our lives and what role DMTI’s Location Hub® Portal can play.

Arthur explained that Location Hub® is like an umbrella name or brand for a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that DMTI uses to incorporate a suite of products together into an easy to use self-serve portal, allowing bulk processing of address data. It could probably be simplified into two main components; an application side and a web services side. Together they provide clients the functionality that allows them to tap into accurate, current and reliable frequently updated location data, and perform spatial location analysis all from a simple intuitive interface that is available at any time.

Using Location Hub to Unlock the Power of Location Economics - Power of Location Economics

Unlike traditional GIS that is typically built around X, Y coordinate values with attribute information and designed for more technical people whereas location analytic services uses an address as the key approach to connect attributes while defining the location spatially at the same time.

When you stop and think about it, almost nothing in everyday life uses coordinates to define locations, yet nearly all data contains address based information, therefore it makes perfect sense to have Location Hub® start with the addresses and then build a GIS behind the scenes, leveraging the most comprehensive base data available in Canada. This is perhaps one of the key components of Location Hub®, rather than referencing a single data source, it leverages DMTI’s master address repository, an extensive data base of data, kept current through a rapid, agile, frequent update cycle.

“The Master Address Repository is the largest nationally sourced Canadian geospatial database cross-referenced from more than 7,300 federal, municipal and public partnerships. Using Location Hub to Unlock the Power of Location Economics - Location Hub ButtonsEnd users (who most often do not have much or any GIS technical background) are then supplied with attribute rich properly formatted geocoded spatial data that defines location while telling a story about those locations and the information within. After the input data is cleaned, formatted and processed, any gaps found within the uploaded files are filled in to include any missing addresses within the same geographic boundaries and duplicated data is consolidated or removed.

The target audience for Location Hub® has been typically commerce, enterprise and government but could virtually be anybody that had a database or spreadsheet of address based information. Many organizations have large data sets or lists of address but no way of providing standardized data matched or processed with accurately up to date base-data.

Built around a philosophy of the end user (What do they need? What could they use?), Location Hub® has been carefully planned with the “customer” in mind. Delivered through an interactive web interface, that is typically different than most traditionally GIS software, designed simple enough that almost anybody can use it. All the different address recognition algorithms are hidden behind the scenes so no one needs to know which ones they should be using and just feed in the data and the decisions with results are provided through end data and a detailed report.

The Geomatics Technician Diploma is a 3 year program based around cooperative education to help provide students with experience to accompany their technical training.
