GIS has become a well known method for communicating spatial information and these days we tend to see more and more geomatics based applications pop up as GIS continues to spread out into more industries. A relative new term to geomatics would be ‘Environmental GIS’; one that is often used to describe using geo-spatial methods and tools to help develop and manage environmental strategies. The University of Toronto offers a Certificate in GIS for Environmental Management program that helps students build a solid foundation of GIS and Remote Sensing concepts and theory while developing skills related to environmental management.

The one year certificate programs is comprised of two required core GIS courses and two other geomatics related courses, all offered through distance education online over the internet.

Graduates of the Certificate in GIS for Environmental Management Program may also become eligible for the Environmental Professional in Training designation under the national certification program for Canadian environmental professionals. Certification is a highly discussed topic these days in many geomatics networks and can help establishes your professional credibility at a national level demonstrating to potential clients and employers that you have a unique combination of skills, practical knowledge, education and experience.

“Certification is crucial in the environmental sector where green-washing makes it difficult to separate the self-proclaimed experts from the real ones. It demonstrates an individual’s professionalism, commitment to the field, and desire to remain on top of current practices. The program is designed for those that are new to GIS with no background knowledge of geomatics (although it never hurts to have some knowledge) so there are no prerequisites except a basic understanding of computers and Windows operating systems. In the first course students receive an introduction to digital mapping and spatial analysis techniques through GIS and then the other courses build upon that knowledge. Esri ArcGIS 10 software running on the Centre for Environment’s GIS server is provided to students so that they can access their course-work from virtually any computer with an internet connection and not need to worry about any troubles involved with installing GIS software on their own computer. The popular Esri ‘Virtual Campus’ online courses are also provided to students to use in the program.

All courses are self paced within a defined schedule led by an instructor that provides lectures and guides students through the material, assignments and training. Online courses offer flexibility and convenience for people who have started careers and families and do not have the luxury of being able to go back to school full time. This way they can study at their own pace and cut travel or relocation costs while adding geomatics skills and knowledge to their existing portfolio.

GIS Conference and Events in Canada

Attending a professional GIS conference or  geomatics related events is always a great way to stay current with what is happening in the geomatics industry and provides amble opportunity to enjoy a good time while networking and mingling with others in the geomatics sector. Canadian GIS Conference and Events - 2005 CIG Conference in Ottawa

Many professional organizations across Canada offer great geomatics related conferences and events every year, so we created the Canadian GIS Conference and Events section on CanadianGIS.com as a way to provide the geospatial community with free information about the various related conferences, events, workshops, training seminars and webinars that are being offered.

Our events section includes a variety events related to GIS, remote sensing, surveying, cartography, geography and all other geomatics disciplines (and from British Columbia to Newfoundland).

We are fortunate enough to be able to attend several GIS conference and events every year all across Canada so we also post summaries of past events (when we can) with photos for those that were not fortunate enough to attend but wanted to know how the conference or event turned out.

The Geomatics Technician Diploma is a 3 year program based around cooperative education to help provide students with experience to accompany their technical training.

Niagara College

Niagara College GIS CertificateAt Niagara College they combine GIS, remote sensing and geodatabase management together throughout the three terms. The one year GIS Certificate program at Niagara on the Lake Campus includes a thesis project that students work on for the whole term while working along side with employers to help design and implement real world GIS projects.

Niagara continuously updates their GIS program to meet the changing and evolving needs of the Geomatics industry. A full year long thesis project is required where students get to work with real employers designing and implementing real world GIS skills on a real world project. The Niagara College offers a $750 bursary to eligible students who are enrolled in full time Graduate Certificate Program such as the GIS program.

“When deciding to go back to school at the age of 36, I wanted to get into the Niagara College GIS / Geospatial Management program. When I found out that I needed to have a degree or relevant work experience to get in; I spent 5 ½ years in university to obtain a BSc. in Geography.

While centered mostly on ESRI software and products, this program also provides experience in MapInfo, Manifold, AutoCAD Map 3D, ERDAS Imagine as well as various elements of programming. The 34th Canadian Symposium on Remote Sensing will take place in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia this summer from August 27 to the 29. This years conference will be the first one under the new independent society (the Canadian Remote Sensing Society – CRSS separated from CASI last fall).

CRSS invites all the Canadian Geomatics, Earth Observation and Remote Sensing communities and any one interested in Remote Sensing to join them in Victoria. The conference program has not yet been finalized and the deadline for papers have been extended so there is still time for those interested in presenting.

The CRSS Canadian Symposiums that I have attended in the past have all been very informative and entertaining and I am sure that this one in August will be no different. Canadian Institute of Geomatics Conference

The Canadian Institute of Geomatics (CIG) is a professional association that represents the interests of the Canadian geomatics community. The CIG recently announced that they will be holding their next annual conference as a joint event shared with the 4th International Conference on Earth Observation for Global Changes. Over the years the CIG has built a solid reputation for hosting great conferences that provide the geomatics community with an open platform where they can exchange ideas or information about research and advancements in the geospatial industry.

Global change is one of the hottest research topics worldwide these days and Earth observation coupled with geomatics has proven to be a very powerful means to help study global changes. CIG conferences provides participants with a professional medium to present some of their ongoing research, projects and ideas relative to global change and earth observations with an emphasis on geospatial information, remote sensing technology, and GNSS. The joint conference will contain several workshops, keynote speakers, panel discussions and technical sessions.

The event will be hosted at Ryerson University in downtown Toronto and take place over three days in June. The last CIG conference was also held in Toronto back in 2007 and was the 100th CIG conference.

Papers and workshop proposals are still being accepted for the conference and all full papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Some papers will be selected, peer-reviewed and also published in a special volume of ‘Springer Lecture Notes’ and future special journal issues.

The job market has been slowly recovering but layoffs and high unemployment rates are still causing many people to change their career to an area outside of their college major. The good news is that even when you make a career change, you can still find work and be successful. And luckily enough Geomatics is one of those unique disciplines where one can add to an existing background and branch out into other areas.

The Wall Street Journal says the average person actually changes careers about five times in their lifetime, most of the time ending up outside of the scope of their college major. However, this figure can be hard to define because a simple job switch is not the same as a complete career change. The good news is that no matter how many times you change careers you can always learn from the experience.

Online web mapping for most people is still a relatively new concept; however it has actually been around now for many years now, long enough that a good majority of us now take it for granted. And like many other great products from our modern society there are always various versions or brands that tend to shine and become more popular than the others.

They have evolved so much over the past few years that I am sure you have noticed that even more people have them with them everywhere they go via, GPS navigation units, net books, tablets, smart phones and other portable devices. And hopefully you have already discovered the web mapping section on CanadianGIS.com about the many great Canadian online web maps that are out (and grows every month) to help make our lives easier.

 Ottawa - Ontario - Google Maps View 1I remember when I first started out in GIS, how it was always challenging to explain to people what I did for a living (and that I did not actually just make the road maps they bought at the gas station).

Now days it has been much easier to explain to people what GIS is thanks to the rather recent increased knowledge about GIS and Geomatics due to more people using the basic free online mapping services like Google or Bing Maps.

Therefore I thought it was time to look at perhaps the two most common free mapping services that most of use all the time to see, how they compare to one another and how they have evolved over the past few years.

 Google Maps – maps.google.ca

So I will start off with Google Maps since I am sure most of us have come across a map generated in google or a website using Google before.

Google Maps is a web mapping service that powers many online map-based services, such as the main Google Maps website, Google Ride Finder, Google Transit, and embedded maps on thousands of websites that use Google Maps API.

Google Maps as we know it know started off as a little C++ program designed by two brothers Lars Rasmussen and Jens Rasmussen from the company Where 2 Technologies. Originally it was a stand-alone program that you needed to download and was not a web based product like it is today. In 2004 Google acquired their company and then transformed the mapping software into an interactive web application.

The first version released in 2005, was based on raster tiles organized into quad tree schematic layouts with the data loading done via XML & HTTP requests. Google uses JavaScript to serve the map data into your browser application. Perhaps the big thing that made Google’s product stand out from the others was when they provided code that allowed other users to integrate maps into their own websites (e.g. CanadianGIS.com).

Google Maps offers street maps, and a routine planner that can be configured for the method you are traveling (whether it is by foot, car, bike, or via public transportation). It also has an urban business locator for numerous countries in the world.

In 2007, they added Streetview, which provides users with a 360° captured view of streets in most major towns and cities. Basically a system was designed with multiple cameras that were mounted to the roof of vehicles that could capture data on all sides of the vehicles as the vehicle drove down the street.

Some areas are obviously covered better than others, but the project continues so more areas are covered as time goes on. They also incorporate satellite imagery and aerial photography in many places as well (whenever data sets are available); with the ability to produce quick Hybrid style maps containing map layers, labels and imagery fused together into one mapping product.

The Google Maps application has been pretty rock solid providing others the ability to show case their own mapping data without the need of purchasing high-end GIS mapping software.
