OpenStreetMap User Guide
If you have been following our OpenStreetMap topic over the past few months then I am sure you have come to the realize that it is a community driven project and that anyone can edit OpenStreetMaps. But where does one start?
Below are some resource documents to help you get started using OpenStreetMap created by LearnOSM. These documents provide easy to understand, step-by-step guides that will explain how you can start contributing to OpenStreetMap and using OpenStreetMap data in your projects.
The beginner guide provides step by step instructions to help users get started with OpenStreetMap. It teaches how to create a free account, how to use the map editing tools, and how to collect information to create custom maps with.

Bathymetry is used to measure water depths to help model physical underwater terrain found beneath large bodies of water. Similar to the same way that LiDAR models are represent 3D features (or relief) of land terrain, bathymetric maps illustrate the terrain or land that is located under large bodies of water.

Because an unknown GIS file format can be every GIS analysts worst nightmare.
In a GIS career, a person will encounter a wide range of GIS formats. GIS technicians manage, share and create data in various geospatial data formats. Here is the Ultimate List of GIS Formats & Geospatial File Extensions, some are common while some are not so common.
Recently, someone contacted me looking for information on where they could find topographic map data for the Thunder Bay area, so I assumed that they must have already checked the Canadian data page, so suggested that they check out the Ontario Basic Mapping web site (OBM).
The Ontario Basic Mapping (OBM) site by the Geography Network is a great online resource with simplistic interactive interface that provides users tools to create customized map views and the ability to download various topographic base mapping data for the entire Province of Ontario. The site contains GIS layers created from 1:10,000 base maps from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources that people can download including layers for transportation, water, municipal, elevation, parks and conservation areas.
Today I have included more information about the OBM including a video on how to download free topographic data from the site.
The Canadian Geospatial Directory contains basic information about the various Geomatics related companies found in and around Canada (with some from abroad) including many key aspects such as the companies basic info, contact info, web site info and geographic location.
We started adding content to the directory using our own database of 1000+ Canadian companies and organizations from coast to coast that work in the geomatics field. However, it is time for the Canadian Geomatics community to help us further fill out the directory by contributing more information to existing listings and adding new listings for companies and services that have yet to be included.
All this is free, so find out how you can help add information about your Canadian company or organization …
Surrey launches OpenData Program
Surrey, BC –The City of Surrey launched its open data program today as part of its commitment to an open, transparent and accessible government. The new Open Data Catalogue comprises more data sets than any other municipality in Canada, and will increase efficiency and productivity for staff and public by making the data available to everyone on the City website.
More than 300 data sets comprise the catalog including City information often requested by the public such as:
• Crime statistics
• Restaurant inspection reports
• Statement of Financial Information
• Sustainability indicators
• imagery (orthophotos) & LIDAR
“The City of Surrey is committed to pursuing innovative best practices to allow for transparency and efficiencies through technology,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. “As a progressive City, the launch of the Surrey Open Data Program will empower our citizens by providing them with even easier access to City reports, statistics and information.”
Open data is the idea that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control.
“Providing open data improves the public’s ability to easily access, download and utilize City information,” said Councillor Bruce Hayne, Chair of the Investment & Innovation Committee. “It also provides the additional benefit of eliminating the costs associated with related information requests.”
The City’s Open Data Program is a component of its ‘Smart Surrey Strategy’ which seeks to build a city that uses technology and innovation to transform life and work within its region in significant and fundamental ways. Using new and existing technologies and information, the Strategy identifies and implements systems to inform decision-making, create efficiencies and maximize its resources.

Over the past few years CanadianGIS.com has been highlighting and promoting various cities and provinces in Canada that have done a great job providing data and applications to the public.
We created this page a few years ago to collaborate links of all the open geospatial data info (sites that offer data downloads at no cost and without restrictions), fee based geospatial data, online web mapping applications and other great sources of geospatial information (including National, Provincial and Regional levels).
This comprehensive list of open geospatial data, fee based geospatial data, web mapping applications and cartographic products is a valuable asset to many people (… we get hundreds of emails and requests regarding “Where can I find data for …?”) so we continue to update it with new information and sources of Canadian data sets.
