Geomatics Industry News

Geomatics is a rapidly growing industry that combines a variety of disciplines including GIS, surveying, remote sensing, geographic information, cartography, and photogrammetry. It is used for a variety of applications such as mapping and navigation, urban planning, conservation and resource management, land acquisition, and construction.

The geomatics industry is constantly evolving and improving, thanks to advances in technology and the increasing demand for data and location information. Companies in the geomatics industry are actively seeking new ways to use data and technology to create more efficient, accurate, and cost-effective solutions.

The “Geomatics Industry News” section of our site includes various Canadian geomatics industry related information on GIS surveying, remote sensing, geographic information, cartography, and photogrammetry. See the various pages listed further below for more information …

HERE Technologies at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018

Location Technology will make an Autonomous Future a Reality

/
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, better known by most as CES thanks to HERE, who included me in a small group of professionals that they invited to Las Vegas to see how Location Technology is leading the way to an Autonomous Future. The main focus of the exhibit was show casing HERE's vision on the Autonomous Innovative Future built on location technology, including smart cities, autonomous vehicles, smart fleet tracking, advances in mobility, drones, and high speed transportation.

HERE and Unifly to map the airspace for drones

/
Soon it may not only be our roads that are congested. The growing popularity of drones, whether for recreational or commercial use, has highlighted the challenge of managing traffic in low-altitude airspace. Moreover, in the future Autonomous World, the traffic of both airborne and ground vehicles will need to be well orchestrated to ensure safety and efficiency.

What3words - Making Addressing Easier

What3words – Making Addressing Easier

/
What3Words is a relatively new geocoding system that is actively being used around the world to help make it easier to describe the spatial location of an area. According to the United Nations about 75 percent of the world (almost 4 billion people) has not been properly addressed, making it hard to locate where people live, something that we take for granted here in Canada. Even Esri has made the service available in ArcGIS Online and for ArcGIS for Desktop ...

Geomatics Acronyms and Abbreviations

Geomatics Acronyms and Abbreviations

/
[List updated May 2016] Geomatics has become a pretty common term in Canada lately and includes many different disciplines such as  geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, land surveying, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), photogrammetry, geography and other related forms of spatial mapping. Using acronyms and abbreviations is commonly practiced in the Geomatics industry and most of the time people just assume that everybody else knows what every acronyms and abbreviation stands for. Well that is obviously not the case most of the time and over the years I have created myself a little digital cheat-sheet of geomatics acronyms and abbreviations that I use with my work in my writing. Here is a large collection of common acronyms and abbreviations that you may when working in the Canadian Geomatics industry.
