Would you support a National Geospatial Student Union

Last September we were one of several sponsors who helped make the GoGeomatics Back to School Socials (which took place in numerous cities from coast to coast including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Niagara, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver) a success.

GoGeomatics Managing Director, Jonathan Murphy had his team of group leaders ask attendees to participate in a career survey. One of the questions on the survey was “Would they support a Canadian National Geospatial Student Union if it provided opportunities such as co-operatives, job opportunities or internship positions?” (See actual questions asked here). 83% of the 200 participants responded that, they would support a Canadian National Geospatial Student Union.

Mr. Murphy told us that he added this question to his country wide survey because he feels that Canada does not have a credible organization that represents the interests of student and young professionals within the geomatics sector.

Would you support a National Geospatial Student Union?

National Geospatial Student Union - Geomatics students talkingWhen he was a student, he noticed there was a significant gap in the geospatial community, just like there is now even though there are several groups and associations that argue that they do represent Canadian geomatics students. However when you examine membership and the boards of these organizations you notice that they include members further on in there careers with different agendas.

Not only has GoGeomatics discovered that there is over whelming interest from students and young professionals to form a union that could unite students all across Canada but they have also found out that key members of industry and government, are willing to support such a group.

GoGeomatics knows that they can accomplish such a task on their own,so are seeking volunteers in the geospatial community that are interested in joining a steering committee to further explore creating such a student union. They are looking for a balanced group of people, not just students.

If you are interested in joining the steering committee or finding out what GoGeomatics thinks a Canadian National Geospatial Student Union would do the Canadian geomatics sector, then check out Mr.Murphy’s latest edition to the GoGeomatics Magazine for details.

GIS Training at Colleges and Universities

Our ever evolving Geomatics industry has lead to increased demands for specialized GIS training, and Canada has remained on top of the leading GIS education providers for many years. Here are some of the best Colleges and Universities that offer GIS related programs. This page was created on the site a number of years back to highlight some of the best Colleges and Universities in Canada that offer GIS related programs.

Acadia University – Master of Science in Applied Geomatics

Acadia University Master of Science in Applied Geomatics

Acadia University teamed up with COGS (Centre of Geographic Sciences) in 2005 to provide a unique joint Master of Science in Applied Geomatics program. The Masters program is a full 2 year program of collaborative technical coursework, research and data analysis, where graduate students spend 2 semesters at COGS (or AGRG – Applied Geomatics Research Group), 2 semesters at Acadia University (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) and then 2 semesters on their thesis research at either schools. This unique faculty offers students to complete their Thesis / Research Project under joint supervision with a combination of technical and academic emphasizes.

“The fundamental relevance of this program is that its graduates will be fully competent to tackle existing or predicted environmental problems, from solid theoretical and practical foundations, using a variety of skills, and an array of new technologies. Graduates of this program will become society and industry leaders in: mapping, planning, analysis, understanding and stewardship of the natural environment.”

The joint collaboration between the two education institutes allows students to further build upon their solid undergraduate foundation that they got from their University degree, adding skills in research, analysis, interpretation and presentations. This method is believed to provide students with an added edge to help them better compete in the Geomatics industry. COGS & AGRG help provide students with the latest Geomatics software and technology while Acadia provides students with scientific tools and accredited resources. For example AGRG is one of the few education institutes in North America that have their own LIDAR survey equipment allowing students to gain more experiences from their research that they may not obtain from other schools.

Giant Canadian Floor Map Series

Giant Canadian Floor Map - CGCRT June 2014 - Giant Floor Map 2Giant Canadian Floor Map Series

Canadian Geographic is providing Canadian educators (K to 12) with a new innovative hands-on creative way to teach Canada’s rich geographic history to younger generations.

Their “Giant Floor Map Program” is a free resource that teachers can borrow to help enhance students’ geography experiences through a hands-on, fun creative way to learn. The large giant floor maps of Canada, are created from a heavy-stock vinyl material and cover an area of just over 84 square meters (roughly half the size of an elementary school gymnasium). Each map series also comes with an activity trunk that includes a Teacher’s guide, media kit and pre-planned activities with all required materials.

It is really hard to appreciate the true size, resolution and quality of these maps through photos on the web, however one of the maps were displayed at the June CGCRT national workshop that I attended and I must say, these giant floor maps are just as impressive as they sound and certainly will provide many young people with a new perspective for mapping and the spatial extent of Canada.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Giant Floor maps are available on loan for 3-week periods throughout the school year and by special request during the summer.

The following Giant Floor Maps are available:

  • The War of 1812 – a historical map depicting the main theaters of war set on a backdrop stretching from Fort Detroit to the western tip of Newfoundland and as far south as Baltimore.”
  • Parks Canada: Places and Spaces for Everyone – a topographic map of Canada, highlighting Canada’s national parks, marine conservation areas and historic sites.”
  • Canadian Boreal Forest – a topographic map depicting the vast and valuable boreal forest within Canada’s borders. This map shows all of the aspects related to the groundbreaking Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement, including woodland caribou range, aboriginal treaties and protected areas, as well as forest-product company tenures.”
  • Canada’s Energy: Production and Transmission – a topographic map that shows Canada’s main energy transmission lines, areas of production and energy infrastructure. Students have the opportunity to investigate the critical role that energy plays in Canadians’ lives and how the energy landscape will change in coming years.”
  • Canada from Space – comprised of images taken by Canada’s RADARSAT-2 and is the first of its kind. Explore how Earth observation satellites monitor Canada and can be used to protect and prepare Canadians. Through ten curriculum-linked activities, students will learn first-hand how pollution and natural disasters impact our country, the importance of Canada’s arctic ice, and the scientific phenomenon of the northern lights. They also get a chance to see Canada from the International Space Station, through the eyes of the Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.”

University of Toronto – GIS for Environmental Management

University of Toronto GIS for Environmental Management

Programs: Certificate in GIS for Environmental Management ProgramUniversity of Toronto GIS for Environmental Management - School of the Environment, University of Toronto
Duration: 1 year (4 courses)
Location: (Anywhere in Canada – Online Program)

GIS has become a well known method for communicating spatial information and these days we tend to see more and more geomatics based applications pop up as GIS continues to spread out into more industries. A relative new term to geomatics would be ‘Environmental GIS’; one that is often used to describe using geo-spatial methods and tools to help develop and manage environmental strategies. The University of Toronto offers a Certificate in GIS for Environmental Management program that helps students build a solid foundation of GIS and Remote Sensing concepts and theory while developing skills related to environmental management.

The one year certificate programs is comprised of two required core GIS courses and two other geomatics related courses, all offered through distance education online over the internet.

“The School of the Environment at the University of Toronto specializes in innovative, completely on-line, distance education courses and certificate programs for working professionals. Our applied and professional programs are developed in collaboration with industry experts and taught by leading industry practitioners ensuring current and leading edge knowledge and skills. Courses are developed for mid-career professionals and entrepreneurs who need to enhance their expertise, internationally educated professionals augmenting credentials for the Canadian context and recent college and university graduates seeking to advance their careers, enabling all to excel. Make informed decisions: impact your profession. “

Graduates of the Certificate in GIS for Environmental Management Program may also become eligible for the Environmental Professional in Training designation under the national certification program for Canadian environmental professionals. Certification is a highly discussed topic these days in many geomatics networks and can help establishes your professional credibility at a national level demonstrating to potential clients and employers that you have a unique combination of skills, practical knowledge, education and experience.

“Certification is crucial in the environmental sector where green-washing makes it difficult to separate the self-proclaimed experts from the real ones. It demonstrates an individual’s professionalism, commitment to the field, and desire to remain on top of current practices. It is also a measure of a professional’s competencies against verified standards, which set them apart from others in the industry.”

The program is designed for those that are new to GIS with no background knowledge of geomatics (although it never hurts to have some knowledge) so there are no prerequisites except a basic understanding of computers and Windows operating systems. In the first course students receive an introduction to digital mapping and spatial analysis techniques through GIS and then the other courses build upon that knowledge. Esri ArcGIS 10 software running on the Centre for Environment’s GIS server is provided to students so that they can access their course-work from virtually any computer with an internet connection and not need to worry about any troubles involved with installing GIS software on their own computer. The popular Esri ‘Virtual Campus’ online courses are also provided to students to use in the program.

All courses are self paced within a defined schedule led by an instructor that provides lectures and guides students through the material, assignments and training. Online courses offer flexibility and convenience for people who have started careers and families and do not have the luxury of being able to go back to school full time. This way they can study at their own pace and cut travel or relocation costs while adding geomatics skills and knowledge to their existing portfolio.
